NEW JERSEY-AFFILIATED BAR EXAM APPLICANTS AFFECTED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO FEBRUARY 1 FOR NEW JERSEY-AFFILIATED BAR EXAM APPLICANTS AFFECTED BY THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN TO APPLY TO TAKE THE UBE IN NEW JERSEY

As previously announced on January 16, 2019, the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners is aware that New Jersey residents and New Jersey law school graduates are registered to take the Uniform Bar Examination in the District of Columbia during the upcoming February session, but that the administration of that exam is not certain due to the federal government shutdown.  After an initial notification indicated that the functions of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals’ Committee on Admissions have been suspended, the Committee on Admissions posted a notice to its website on January 11, 2019, stating that “Based on all available information at this time, [the Committee is] still planning to administer the February 2019 bar examination as scheduled.  However, [the Committee is] closely monitoring any new developments with the federal government shutdown; and the status of the scheduled exam could change.”  (Source: https://www.dccourts.gov/court-of-appeals/committee-on-admissions)

In light of that development, the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners has extended an opportunity, for New Jersey-affiliated applicants who have already applied to take the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) in the District of Columbia, to apply to take the UBE in New Jersey.

Applicants who have already applied to take the Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) in the District of Columbia and wish, instead, to take the UBE in New Jersey will need to provide the following documentation when applying to New Jersey:

  1. Proof of New Jersey Residency – May be established by submitting one of the following:
    • Proof of graduation from an ABA-approved New Jersey law school,
    • Proof of current New Jersey residency, or
    • Proof of past or current legal employment in New Jersey.
  2. Proof of District of Columbia Bar Exam Application Filed Prior to Closure of the Office of DC Committee on Admissions on December 22, 2018 – May be established by submitting one of the following:
    • Copy of District of Columbia bar examination application or acknowledgement, or
    • Proof of District of Columbia bar examination application fee payment.

Exam Dates:  The New Jersey Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) will be administered on Tuesday, February 26, 2019 and Wednesday, February 27, 2019.

Fee:  The Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) application fee is $675 (includes use of laptop). Application fees must be paid by:  credit card, certified check or money order.  Note:  Once you have applied for the New Jersey Uniform Bar Examination (UBE), all New Jersey fees are nonrefundable.

How to Register and Apply:  Applicants must first register on the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners website before applying.  The registration button can be found on the upper right hand corner of the homepage of the website at:  www.njbarexams.org. Once you have registered, follow the online bar exam application procedures.

Final Deadline for Applications:  Complete applications and fee must be received by the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners by 4:30 PM EST on Friday, February 1, 2019.  Please note that, if you are requesting non-standard testing accommodations, you must complete the Non-Standard Test Application (in addition to the standard bar examination application) and provide all required documentation to be received by the New Jersey Board of Bar Examiners by 4:30 PM EST on Friday, February 1, 2019.
